Everett's Watercolors Q&A

Watercolor Artist and Art Educator Everett Cossaboon answers questions on Watercolor Art.  Topics cover basic to advanced watercolor questions. The sources of these topics are compiled from my 25 years of teaching watercolor techniques in the classroom and on the internet.

1.  Topic: Drawing and Painting

a. Is drawing important to watercolor painting?  5/24/2019

b. Drawing is very important as a design tool  to decide what and where the main subject is located on the paper.

Drawing in a sketchbook to capture the shape and size of an object  along with a photograph to document the subject is the starting point in preparing for a watercolor painting.

Keeping the sketch simple and collect  the essential information.   Making changes and adding elements is easier at this stage.

The drawing could also capture the light and dark areas to evaluate the values to use in the painting.
